If you are involved in a car crash and it's your fault and you have collision coverage, you can take your car to a licensed auto body shop and get an estimate for the repairs. You only need one estimate in Oregon. If the insurance company doesn't agree with the estimate, they can send a representative out to inspect the vehicle and perform their own estimate. In some unusual cases the two parties won't agree on the estimate of value to fix the car and will require an arbitrator to settle the difference. Once the estimate is approved, the body shop can begin work. You will have to pay or negotiate payment for the deductible amount on you collision coverage in order for the body shop to release your car after it's been repaired.
If you are not at fault in the accident, you can submit one estimate to the other insurance company's claims department. Again, you only need to submit one estimate. They should pay the body shop to fix your car without a deductible
An estimate is just that. As the auto repair shop tears your automobile down they may find additional damage that was not evident in the orginal inspection. They can then apply to the company for supplemental payment.
