Often, clients will present a vehicle identification number for a car to be added to the policy. My first question is, “Who does this belong to?” After several questions, I discover that the vehicle is registered to someone else and they are just “helping them get it insured.” The policy language requires that all insured vehicles must belong to or be registered to a named driver on the policy, or they might not pay after an accident.
This is easy. Car insurance in Oregon follows the car, not the driver, and only the owner has the right AND responsibility to insure it. If someone owns a vehicle without insurance and wants to lend it to another to drive, they must purchase insurance for that vehicle. It’s also a good idea for them to list you on their policy as a driver if you will be using it frequently.
